
In an article posted by the BBC, foreign born residence in Japan have sued the gov’t for alleged racial profiling. According to the article;
The UN defines racial profiling as “the process by which law enforcement relies on generalisations based on one’s race, skin colour, descent or national or ethnic origin, rather than objective evidence or individual behaviour, to subject people to stops, detailed searches, identity checks and investigations, or for deciding that an individual was engaged in criminal activity”.

As someone who has spent their childhood in that region, I can attest to the “stares” as you walk around and at times, it can make you feel uneasy. I do recognize that this did not happen daily. In fact, more often than not, my interactions with the everyday people was pleasant. It’s just that when you experience anything close to racial profiling, it is magnified in your memory.
In 2024, we have to be able to bridge the gap between cultural differences and solidarity.
