In a recent Korea Herald article, an intriguing case was made for the need of outside help to support Korea’s medical industry such as caregivers.

Korea is facing a serious challenge in its healthcare industry: a shortage of doctors and nurses, especially in essential and rural areas. This problem has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exposed the limitations and vulnerabilities of the current system. According to the WHO, Korea has only 2.4 doctors per 1,000 people, which is lower than the OECD average of 3.5. Many doctors are concentrated in urban areas and specialized fields, leaving rural areas and primary care underserved.

One way to address this challenge is to accept more foreigners to work in Korea’s healthcare industry. This would have several benefits for the country, such as:

– Increasing the supply and availability of medical professionals in areas where they are needed most, such as pediatrics, obstetrics, and emergency departments.

– Improving the quality and diversity of medical services, especially for the growing number of foreign residents and visitors in the country, who may have different needs, preferences, and expectations.

– Fostering international cooperation and exchange, which can enhance the reputation and competitiveness of Korea’s healthcare industry, as well as promote cultural understanding and mutual learning.

Of course, accepting more foreigners to work in Korea’s healthcare industry also poses some challenges, such as ensuring the quality and compatibility of their education and training, providing adequate language and cultural support, and addressing potential conflicts and discrimination. However, these challenges can be overcome with proper policies and regulations, as well as a positive and welcoming attitude from the society.

It is important for Korea to accept more foreigners to help in its healthcare industry, as it will not only benefit the public health and welfare of the country, but also contribute to its economic and social development.
