One thing about Filipino’s (can be viewed as good and also bad) is that no matter the situation, a spirit of positivity is shown. A communal spirit that transcends individual interests, focusing on collective well-being. Filipino’s call this Bayanihan. This spirit was present during the mass flooding in the capital during Typhoon Carina.

Typhoon Carina, also known as Typhoon Khanun in its international name, made landfall in the Philippines in July 2024. It caused significant damage to various regions, including Manila. The typhoon brought heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding that affected infrastructure, homes, and businesses. In Manila, the impact included widespread flooding in low-lying areas, disruption to transportation, and power outages. The typhoon’s heavy rainfall led to several areas being inundated, which affected daily life and posed challenges for rescue and relief operations.

Despite all this, there were glimpses of that Bayanihan spirit as shown in this TikTok from @kee_Barcelona (used with permission).

I can relate to the joy expressed by those in the video, despite the surrounding circumstances. I tend to find the positive in difficult situations—it’s just how I am. If your reaction is different, that’s completely okay. Regardless, it’s clear they’re having a great time.
